Our Pillars for a Sustainable Future

As part of our commitments to CSR, we conducted our carbon footprint assessment for the year 2023 following the Bilan Carbone® methodology, initiated by ADEME and supported by the Association for the Low Carbon Transition (ABC).

This tool allows us to measure all Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by our activities while identifying our main emission sources, understanding their origin, and implementing concrete actions to reduce them.
This initiative is part of a drive for transparency and continuous improvement, mobilizing all our teams around a common goal: sustainably reducing our environmental impact.
What do these scopes correspond to?
Scope 1
Corresponds to direct emissions occurring on our site, for example, via equipment or our vehicle fleet.
Scope 2
Corresponds to indirect emissions associated with energy production, such as electricity or cooling.
Scope 3
Corresponds to other indirect emissions. In this category, we find emissions linked to upstream and downstream freight, employee commuting, purchasing, digital activities, or the end-of-life of our products.

Objective 2030: reduce our CO2 emissions by 40% …
This action plan will enable us to reach our goal: reducing our GHG emissions by 40% by 2030, in accordance with the National Low-Carbon Strategy (SNBC).

The SNBC itself aligns with the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Our action plan is articulated around 5 main axes:
At Biowest, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is much more than an obligation; it is a fundamental pillar of our global strategy. We are convinced that economic performance must be inseparable from respect for the environment, ethical practices, and social progress. This vision guides our development and structures our entire supply chain.
To attest to the rigor and coherence of our sustainable development commitments, we have had our approach evaluated by EcoVadis, the global reference platform for assessing corporate CSR performance.
Biowest awarded the EcoVadis Bronze Medal in 2025
The efforts of our teams and the robustness of our CSR approach have been recognized by EcoVadis.

In 2025, Biowest obtained the prestigious EcoVadis Bronze Medal, with a score that officially positions us in the top 35% of companies evaluated by the platform.

This medal acknowledges a structured approach, covering the four themes evaluated by the organization:

Why is EcoVadis certification essential for our B2B partners?
In the current context, choosing a responsible supplier partner is a strategic necessity for any company. Biowest’s EcoVadis score provides you with several guarantees:

Security of Supply
The assessment helps us identify and mitigate risks in our value chain, ensuring the resilience and reliability of our deliveries.
Compliance and Traceability
It proves the compliance of our operations with international standards regarding labor, the environment, and ethics.
Shared Value
By collaborating with Biowest, you improve your own CSR supply chain and contribute to creating a more sustainable economy.
Continuous Improvement
Obtaining the Bronze Medal is a significant step, but above all, it marks the beginning of a continuous improvement process. Our ambition remains intact: strengthen our actions and evolve our practices to reduce our environmental impacts.

We are continuing our efforts, notably on:
Identifying CSR priorities based on double materiality analysis.
Updating and improving our Carbon Footprint.
Developing our responsible purchasing policy.
Improving the well-being and safety of our employees.
Our Fundamental Commitment to Animal Welfare
At Biowest, we place ethical responsibility and animal welfare at the heart of our production practices. Our commitment is twofold: guaranteeing the quality and safety of our serums while maintaining the most rigorous ethical standards throughout our supply chain.

Our commitment is twofold: guaranteeing the quality and safety of our serums while maintaining the most rigorous ethical standards throughout our supply chain.

This approach is essential for the confidence of our partners and reflects our deep values.
Adherence to International Standards and Guidelines
We ensure the production of our animal serums in strict compliance with global animal health benchmarks, in particular:

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH/OIE): Our production processes align with the animal welfare principles established by the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

The Five Freedoms: We guarantee animal welfare among our suppliers by applying the international guidelines of the Five Freedoms, which cover the fundamental needs of animals (freedom from hunger and thirst, from stress and fear, from pain, and from disease).

An Active Engagement:
The 3Rs Principle and Responsible Sourcing
Our CSR policy actively integrates the three internationally recognized “Rs” that guide research and responsible production.

Furthermore, Biowest guarantees ethical sourcing: we work exclusively with fetal bovine blood collected as a by-product of cows slaughtered for commercial reasons and unrelated to their gestation status.

Reduction
Minimizing the number of animals.
Refinement
Improving methods and conditions to alleviate potential pain.
Replacement
Developing and prioritizing technologies alternative to live animal models.
Transparency and Process Control
To guarantee ethical production of Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), we apply strict procedures in the blood collection process:

Safety and Ethics
The collection of blood from unborn calves is only performed after they have been declared deceased and the absence of vital signs has been rigorously confirmed. This methodology aims to eliminate any risk of pain perception by the fetus.
European Traceability
Our European FBS benefits from strict guidelines defined by European Union regulations regarding animal treatment. Ear tagging and labeling at the farm allow for complete traceability of the serum down to the individual animal.
Our work is a quest for constant improvement, supported by scientific research and the expertise of organizations like the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and associations like the Global Serum Alliance, whose objectives we share. Our commitment is your guarantee.
